Giz Herbst Honored at Golden Heart Awards

If you’ve enjoyed the work of the Egg Harbor Historical Society, then you’ve enjoyed the long hours and in-depth research of Giz Herbst. Giz has been a part of the organization since its founding, and his energy and enthusiasm for Egg Harbor history has been invaluable.

On Thursday, April 19, that work was rewarded as Herbst was honored as one of the nominees for the Karl May Lifetime of Service Volunteer of the Year Award. The award is sponsored by the Sturgeon Bay Rotary Charitable Foundation and is given out by the Volunteer Center of Door County.

Herbst was nominated for making “history come alive for thousands of Egg Harbor residents and visitors.”

Herbst has assembled seven compilations on the history of Egg Harbor buildings, places, and artifacts, including the Bookmobile, the settlement at Horseshoe Bay, and the history of village. His watercolors and photos of historic businesses and landmarks are valued pieces of our collection, and his quarterly newsletter has been instrumental in informing our members and adding new ones. Herbst is keeping an important part of Doo rCounty history alive for the benefit of the entire Door County community.
